Good post Harvey... Let me add that the term "online lead generation" can be nebulous, to say the least. I use it to describe my own company's efforts to drive targeted and qualified web traffic to the online presence of local businesses. Whether the visitor to the site decides to opt-in to an email list is another story, and often depends on many factors- such as conversion, stickiness of site, etc.

Also, I think you're right on about PPC. Many smaller businesses, especially ones I deal with, just don't have the $250+ per day it takes to drive targeted traffic to their web site.

Great info!

Self funded start-up business owners rarely feel they can afford advertising. The only way that pay-per-click campaign management works for a start-up is if they have a profitable product. If the business model is healthy, there's some room for advertising expense. Since pay per click lets you set your budget, it can be attempted with relatively little risk.

I don't recommend that start-up businesses use a custom web designer immediately. I've recently started helping people get started with a professional look for a very small fee compared to what is required for custom design.

So according to you what you will vouch on Harvey , a lead generating company , which may or may not provide you full baked lead or a PPC campaign which got same probability of generating leads. As we are talking on small business and we understand that small business owners are lil skeptical about experimenting because they can't afford to loose their capital without any result as they got no margin for error.

Also I would like to know the places where I can see lots of vendors who can make my website. Places like craiglist .

I spoke with someone this week who pointed out that often "lead generation" refers to a service that sells leads to businesses. In this scenario, the lead generation company drives traffic to their own websites and collects email addresses, then sells their lists to others.

I'm using lead generation with the idea of helping businesses generate thier own opt-in email lists on their own websites. This is a much more sustainable approach.
